Preparing for Welding

Preparation for welding consists in elaboration of allowances for melting, upsetting and further processing of working edges. The die workpieces should not have spatial and flat curvature. The surface of the die tooling is also cleaned from dirt, scale, residual process lubricants and burrs. Chemical or mechanical methods are used. Butt welding equipment is selected according to the necessary pressure, heating temperature, and productivity parameters (compression and upsetting time).

Friction welding

For friction welding the range of possible diameters of round pieces (punches, ejectors, etc.) is 10 ... 100 mm and for resistance electric welding the range is 8 ... 85 mm. Friction welding of stamped steels occurs due to the heat that is generated by the compression and subsequent rotation in different directions of the joined workpieces. In contact electric welding of articles made of stamped steel, heating of the adjacent end parts is due to the thermal effect of the electric current flowing over the welded workpieces. Technological conditions of the process of electric butt welding

  • The density of the welding current during heating and subsequent melting;
  • The voltage at the jaws of the gripping equipment;
  • Deposition pressure.

Sequence

Reach (free length) of the blanks joined in this way from the stamped steels should not exceed 10 ... 15 mm (smaller values are used for electric butt welding of high-speed steels). The process is carried out in the following sequence. Preheating of the blanks is performed first, followed by melting of the end sections and then their upsetting. Regardless of the technology used, after welding of the stamped steel, annealing is obligatory. Annealing is carried out in electric furnaces.
