Material overview

Specialty steel is a purchasing category that includes corrosion-resistant, heat-resistant, tool, spring, high-strength and other controlled-alloy grades. It is not one interchangeable material. A useful enquiry starts with a complete grade designation and the standard required by the drawing, code or end user.

Product forms and sourcing

Available sourcing can be reviewed for seamless or welded tube, round or flat bar, sheet, plate, strip, wire, forgings, cast stock and customer-specified blanks. Availability varies by alloy family, manufacturing route, dimensions, condition, quantity and certification. State whether cutting, machining allowance or a finished blank is required.

Specification and substitution

A similar chemical composition does not automatically establish an approved equivalent. Different standards may use different limits for chemistry, heat treatment, mechanical properties, cleanliness, testing and dimensional tolerances. If alternatives are permitted, identify the properties and specification clauses that must remain unchanged.

The purchaser remains responsible for material selection, design approval and confirmation that the specified material is suitable for the finished component and service environment.

Information required for a quote

Provide the exact grade, ASTM, ASME, AMS, SAE, EN, DIN, GOST or customer specification and revision, product form, dimensions, condition, quantity, tolerances, surface finish, testing, marking and material certificate requirements. Include the intended use when it affects the required condition or inspection.
