Technical Characteristics
Tool alloys have significantly higher hardness as compared to structural ones (especially after quenching) but are more brittle. Tool steels are subdivided by their chemical composition into carbon steels (GOST 1435-54), alloyed (GOST 5952-51) and high-speed steels (GOST 5952-51).
Carbon content
Tool steels are subdivided in carbon content and hardness into low-carbon steels with carbon content of 0.25%, medium-carbon steels - from 0.25% to 0.6% and high-carbon steels - from 0.6 to 2%.
Marking
Tool steels in accordance with State Standard 1435-54 may have the following marking: U7; U8; U8G; U9; U10; U11; U12; U13. The letter "Y" indicates the presence of carbon, and the next number - the average carbon content in tenths of a percent. The letter G indicates elevated manganese content.
