Gland axial expansion joint

General characteristics

expansion joints absorb temperature deformations of steam and water pipes, with water temperature up to 200°C and steam up to 300°C and operating pressure up to 2.5 MPa (25 kgf/cm2). They are used in the construction of heating systems where the outside temperature is at least -40°C. Their advantage is considered a large compensating capacity among similar devices.

Stuffed gland compensators belong practically to the very first type of compensating devices that were used in pipelines. The gland expansion joints are used in thermal steam and water pipes for the pressure range 1.6 - 2.5 MPa, for water temperature up to 300 °C and for steam temperature up to 300 °C. Gland expansion joints are used for laying the pipelines of heating mains underground and for aboveground laying on low piers. Gland expansion joints have the ability to compensate for large linear and angular movements.

Construction of expansion joints

This type of expansion joint consists of steel pipes of close diameter nested inside each other. A smaller diameter pipe is inserted into a larger diameter pipe, and the difference between them is filled with gland packing. Devices are attached to the outside that limit the movement of the inner pipe to prevent it from falling out.

According to the design features of gland compensators are:
- one-sided (nominal diameter 100-1400 mm), which consist of a movable cup and body;
- bilateral (nominal diameter of 100-800 mm) that have two movable cups and extended housing.

Advantages

Stuffing box expansion joints have a high compensating capacity, small size and low hydraulic resistance. Due to the free movement of spigots in relation to each other, they can absorb changes in the length of the pipeline during temperature fluctuations. Due to their small size, they are easy to place in passageways and chambers. For regular maintenance of these compensators (tightening, replacement of gland packing), they are placed in branch chambers of pipelines or in compensatory heat chambers. They are preferably used in straight pipeline sections with large diameters.

Disadvantages

It is not practical to use gland compensators at high frequency of compensating dimensions and pressures. Their scope is limited due to the difficulty of almost complete elimination of leakage of transported products. Therefore, they are not suitable for transporting aggressive, expensive or toxic products.

Fabrication

Bellows expansion joints are made of thick-wall steel pipes or welded of sheet steel as per standard details in accordance with series 4.903-10 of Issue 7 or series 5.903-13 of Issue 4. GOST 15 150-69 provides for the use of steels St3sp5, St20, 09G2S for these expansion joints. Unilateral are designed for nominal passage DN 100-1400 mm, and the bilateral - on the DN 100-800 mm. Compensating capacity depends on the nominal passage. For unilateral expansion joints it is from 200 to 500 mm, for double-sided it is from 200 to 1000 mm. Packing of APP and PA grades (GOST 5152-77) and heat-resistant rubber of grade 5168, group 8 (TUMKhP № 1169-51r) are used for sealing glands.
