Composition and properties

51KhFA grade spring steel is not regularly produced in CIS countries, though its availability is stipulated by GOST 14959. Foreign analogues of steel: in North America - ASTM spring steel (1.8159), in Europe - steel 51CrV4, technical requirements for which comply with the provisions of EN 10277 -5.

The process of melting steel also includes phosphorus and sulfur, the percentage content of which in the final product should not be more than 0.025%.

The main physical and mechanical characteristics of the steels in question:

  • Ultimate tensile strength, MPa, at least - 1274;
  • Ultimate ductility, MPa, not less - 1127;
  • Relative elongation, %, not less - 10;
  • Relative narrowing of cross-section, %, no less - 40;
  • Brinell hardness, HB - 240...280 (depending on the state of delivery)

The steels of this type lend themselves well to all types of heat treatment - annealing, tempering and hardening. Because of the significant amount of carbon in the material, it is rolled predominantly in the hot state.

As the cross-sectional dimensions decrease, the mechanical properties stated above may be reduced by no more than 5%.


Steel spring 51KhFA, 51CrV4, (1.8159) is used for critical springing of machines and mechanisms under dynamic loading and at temperatures exceeding 180...2500 C. The material is characterized by good deformability in the hot state. Welded structures are not made of this steel.

From these steel grades are mainly produced flat springs, torsion springs and springs, which are coiled from wire with the diameter over 30 mm.
