Neusilver is often called melchior or new silver. It is produced on the basis of copper alloyed with zinc 5-35% and nickel 13-45%. According to GOST 492-2006 alloy can contain cobalt, iron or other additives. Depending on the percentage composition nesilber can acquire a bluish or greenish cast.

Basic Qualities

It is a relatively light alloy with a density of 7.5 ^g/cm3, and melts at 1024° C. Its Brinell hardness is 80 kg/mm. Nickel greatly increases the corrosive properties of the alloy, and copper makes it ductile and tough. Neusilber is resilient, strong, resistant to wet condensation, and easily polished. Good ductility allows it to be deformed both hot and cold.

Production

The State Standard 492-2006 of Ukraine regulates the production of bar and flat rolled steel of the following series: MNTs 12-24, MNTs 15-20, MNTs 18-20, MNTs 18-27. Neusilber MNTs 15-20, alloyed with Ni 13,5-16,5% and Zn 18-22%, is a solid solution, or single-phase alloy of these metals. Such alloy is perfectly stamped. Dishes and cutlery of this alloy must be covered with silver or gold to eliminate the metallic flavor. Silver coating thickness is: for cutlery - 24.00±3.60 microns; for knife handles - 18.00±2.70 microns. Gold is applied on the silver sublayer - 0.500±0.075 microns. Production of cutlery made of nesilber is regulated by GOST 24 320-80.

Manufacture of electrical appliances, precision instruments, silver-plated utensils, the so-called melchior, jewelry, medical instruments, as well as equipment, working in contact with water or steam.

From China to Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries, were imported expensive items called "pakfong" made of nesilver, usually silver-plated. They were also called melchior, Chinese silver. The nickel silver grade MNZ 15-20, used for exclusive jewelry, is superior in strength and durability to the 925° silver alloy, containing 92.5% Ag and alloyed with 7.4% Cu.
