General Characteristics
Lutetium is in the third group of D. Mendeleev's table, where it is designated by the chemical symbol Lu. Atomic number 71. It belongs to the lanthanides. atomic weight is 174.967. As an impurity it is found in gadolinite deposits. Modern industry obtains lutetium by separating it from other lanthanides by ion exchange, extraction and fractional crystallization. Calcium can be used to reduce LuF3 to a metal. In its pure form it is a soft silvery metal. In the lanthanoid series it is the heaviest and most heat-resistant. Its melting point is 1663 °C, the highest among the rare earth elements.

Chemical properties
Under normal conditions in the air, lutetium is protected by a strong oxide film. It forms compounds with sulfur, halogens and other nonmetals when heated above 400 ° C. Easily soluble in inorganic acids to form salts. It forms fluorides with hydrofluoric acid and its salts. Lu (OH)3 hydroxide is obtained by hydrolysis of soluble salts.
Applications
Thermostable chrome-nickel alloys for improvement of their technological effectiveness and wear resistance are alloyed with lutetium. Lutetium alloys are used for rolling sheets, rounds, wires, etc
