Powder of tantalum is a finely dispersed mass produced mechanically or chemically. Such powder is relevant in jewelry, electrical engineering (for creation of power-consuming capacitors), in nuclear power engineering - for fuel element cladding. In metallurgy tantalum powder is in demand as an alloying agent for heat-resistant alloys.
Powdered tantalum is based on tantalum production waste - tin TH-3 which is treated with pure hydrogen in hermetic furnaces. Compact tantalum is loosened and oxides are removed from its surface. Then the powder is blasted on a special table, where electrolyte residues are separated and mechanical impurities are washed off. After that the powder mass is washed with water and dried. By another method, tantalum powder can be obtained by electrolysis of a salt melt consisting of Ta2 O5 and K2 TaF7 (potassium fluorotantalate), potassium fluoride and potassium chloride.
Depending on the dispersion, tantalum powder comes in different colors. The darkest is black, but most fractions are lighter and even bluish-steel in color. Pure tantalum powder is very plastic. It is characterized by resistance to moisture, industrial condensate, and concentrated acids. When heated in a stream of hydrogen, it converts to black hydride. Before pressing, tantalum powder is wetted with a solution of glycerine or alcohol. During sintering, these solutions evaporate without residue.
