Nickel and titanium alloy

Shape memory

The ability of a material, after plastic deformation, to restore its original shape after heating. The discovery of the shape memory effect dates back to the beginning of the XX century, when the Swedish scientist Olander was the first to notice this property in cadmium-gold alloys. The same effect was observed in copper-zinc alloys.

Technical Characteristics

Percentage composition of Nitinol

The approximate percent composition of Nitinol is 45% and that of Nickel is 55%, corresponding to the formula TiNi, i.e. the atomic numbers of both elements are essentially equal.

Ti Ni Impurities
44,7−45,2 54,8−55,2 ≤0,3

Nitinol is capable of restoring its original shape after plastic deformation.

Applications

Nitinol is used in surgery especially for vascular stent placement in patients with severe coronary lesions, for treatment of injuries and diseases of musculoskeletal system: funnel chest deformity, vertebral fractures. Also used in dentistry for orthodontic treatment: jaw deformities.
