Nitinol Sheet and Strip for U.S. Customers

Percentage composition of nitinol (GOST 19807 - 91)

The approximate percent composition of Nitinol is 45% and that of Nickel is 55%, which corresponds to the formula TiNi, i.e. the numbers of atoms of both elements are almost equal.

Form memory

The ability of a material, after plastic deformation, to recover its original shape after heating. The discovery of the shape memory effect goes back to the beginning of the XX century when the Swedish scientist Olander was the first to notice this property in gold-cadmium alloys. The same effect was observed in copper-zinc alloys.

Technical characteristics

The alloy is capable of restoring its original shape after plastic deformation. This is observed in alloys characterized by coherence of lattices of initial austenitic and martensitic phases, thermoelastic martensitic transformation, and relatively small value of structural transformation hysteresis.

Applications

Nitinol thin tape is used in surgery and traumatology, in particular for the treatment of injuries and diseases of musculoskeletal system: funnel-shaped deformity of the chest, fractures of the vertebrae. Also used in dentistry for orthodontic treatment: jaw deformities.
