Monel R-405 / UNS N04405 for U.S. machining requirements
Monel R-405 is a free-machining nickel-copper alloy designated UNS N04405. Its controlled sulfur content promotes chip breaking in automatic screw-machine work. It is related to Monel 400 but must be ordered and certified as R-405 when the machinability characteristics and grade designation are required.
Available product form and specification
Monel R-405 is normally furnished as rod and bar. ASTM B164 and ASME SB-164 are common specifications for nickel-copper alloy rod, bar and wire; project or aerospace work may call for a specific AMS or customer document. Wire and specialty products require confirmation of availability. The alloy should not be presented as a general sheet, pipe or forging grade without a governing specification.
