General Characteristics

Cerium is a rare-earth element number 58 of Group 3 of D. I. Mendeleev's table, in which it is designated as Ce. It is a soft silvery-white metal. It belongs to the lanthanoid group. Its atomic weight is 140.115. It was discovered by the German scientist M. Klaproth and (independently of him) by the Swedish chemists Berzelius and Hisinger. This element was named after the largest of the asteroids, Ceres. Its content in the lithosphere is about 70 g/t. In seawater it is dissolved in the amount of 5.^2-10-6 mg/l. It is obtained by electrolysis of _CeF3 fluoride melt.

Physical and chemical properties

The specific gravity of cerium at 20 °C = 6.77 g/cm3. Its melting point reaches 799 °C, boiling point 3426 °C. Even at room temperature it is unstable in the air - slowly oxidizing, it turns into a white oxide. It is readily soluble in inorganic acids. There are two modifications of this metal with hexagonal β-lattice and cubic g-lattice. The transition temperature is 393 °C.

Applications

Production of glass, abrasive and thermoelectric materials, dental prostheses. _SeO2 dioxide is in demand as a catalyst. In metallurgy this metal modifies iron-magnesium alloys. The addition of 1% Ce increases the creep limit and tensile strength of materials. It increases electrical conductivity and strength of aluminum, titanium, copper, and structural steels. At the same time it is much cheaper than lanthanum, which has a similar effect, so cerium is used more widely. When it alloys with zinc, it explodes. Small additions of cerium clean steel from harmful impurities of gases and sulfur. Steel alloying is regulated by GOST 12 364-84. Like other metals of the lanthanide group, it is available in the form of circles, wires, sheets, tape.
