Tin foil, tape
History
Tin was mined and smelted as far back as the ancient Sumerians and Chinese in pre-Biblical times. For many centuries, however, pewter remained a rare and expensive metal, almost as valuable as silver. Pewter jewelry is almost never found in excavations. The need for pewter began to grow in ancient times, with the beginning of the Bronze Age. Along with copper it became a basis for bronze invented in the III millennium B.C. The lion’s share of bronze up to the beginning of the XX century was used for armament production. In ancient times it was bronze swords and other slashing weapons, later bronze cannons and cannonballs. Tin was a «strategic material» for more than two thousand years. The Latin name for this metal, stannum, comes from the Sanskrit word for «sturdy, resistant». A thousand years ago this was the name of an alloy of lead and silver. The purest form of tin was only defined by the alchemists of the fourth century.
General characteristics
Tin is the 50th element in D. Mendeleev’s periodic system, where it is designated by the symbol Sn. Atomic weight 118.7, specific weight 5.846 g/cm3. It has a low melting point of about 231.9° C; its boiling point is 2620° C. It is an excellent conductor of current. At 20 °C it has a resistance of 0.115 Ohm-mm2/m.

Advantages
Tin belongs to easily accessible long used metals. It is characterized by corrosion resistance, low melting point, inexpensive production technology, excellent manufacturability. It is a very ductile, biologically inert metal with excellent antifriction properties. It can be easily stamped, drilled, bent, cut, rolled into the thinnest foil. After disposal it is recyclable and usable. Numerous advantages make it very popular today. The price of 1 kg of Sn depends on its refinement grade. Technical tin costs $18−19 for 1 kg, purified oxide SnO2 — $25, high purity monocrystalline tin — $210 for 1 kg.
Disadvantages
Low strength does not allow the production of supporting parts from tin.
Applications
- Resistant to corrosion, safe for health, coating White Tin — tin tin is an excellent strong container from which to make food containers, lightweight durable containers for water.
- It is indispensable in solders and antifriction alloys that make moving parts easier.
- Tin is a part of many alloys. The most famous of them is bronze. For many years, pewter has been a lesser-known alloy for making cookware. Alloy with niobium, which has superconducting properties, is indispensable in modern electrical engineering. Tin additives make titanium alloys more technologically advanced. Alloy Sn + Zr is characterized by heat resistance and resistance to oxidation when heated, its melting t° 2000 ° C.
- Manganese-tin, mercury-tin, lead-tin batteries are much more energy efficient than pure lead batteries with lower internal resistance.
- SnO2 dioxide is used to polish optical lenses.
- A mixture of tin salts has long been used to dye wool yellow.
