The demand for titanium and its alloys increases every year. Other metals do not have such a high strength-to-weight ratio. That is why titanium is irreplaceable in shipbuilding, aircraft and rocket construction as a construction material. Technically pure BT1-00 titanium can be perfectly polished, color anodized and other surface treatments. It is used in production of various artistic products. It serves as a base for alloys; of particular practical importance are titanium borides, compounds used in nuclear boilers to slow down the chain reaction, due to their high melting point and wide neutron capture cross-section. Titanium halides, oxides and silicides are used in high temperature engineering. Carbides with high hardness are part of tool alloys used as abrasives, edges of cutting tools.
