Crevice and galvanic corrosion
Crevice corrosion.
If the acidity of the medium decreases or the atmospheric pressure decreases, the protective passivating layer of steel may deteriorate. This is characteristic of parts under gaskets, in sharp corners, or in incomplete welding. Such crevices corrode rapidly if a corrosive substance penetrates them. Crevice corrosion, similar to pitting corrosion, but develops at lower temperatures.
Galvanic corrosion
It is characteristic of galvanic coupling between two dissimilar metals. The electric potential that arises between them leads to the electrolytic disintegration of the more reactive metal. This effect can be prevented by electrically insulating the metals, Plastic or rubber washers and bushings are usually used to prevent moisture from getting between the parts. The absence of moisture makes it difficult for the electrolytic pair to form. Another way is to keep the size of the more active metal relative to the less active metal (stainless steel bolts in an aluminum block do not corrode, but aluminum rivets in a sheet of stainless steel quickly oxidize).
