Contact corrosion
Relevance of the problem
Even high-quality steel can rust over time. Since some types of corrosion are atypical and their visible results are hardly visible or much less visible, they can be a source of unexpected problems.
Contact corrosion.
This is a combination of galvanic and crevice corrosion, where there are foreign particles embedded in the stainless steel. These particles form a galvanic pair with the stainless steel, and corrode, leaving deep lacunae in the base material of the steel that, without oxygen access, rapidly expand under the influence of pitting corrosion.
Preventing Contact Corrosion
It is a good idea if workshops have different areas and different tool sets for machining carbon steel and stainless steel. Careful control is needed to avoid direct contact between stainless steel and carbon steel posts. Carbon steel particles are removed from the surface of stainless steel with nitric acid or salts with a mixture of nitric and hydrofluoric acids.
