General characteristics of zinc
Zinc is a metal with a silvery dull color that exists in nature in the form of 12 stable natural isotopes, whose mass numbers range from 62 to 73. The crystal lattice is hexagonal, densely packed. The metal is diamagnetic, it does not undergo polymorphic transformations. Zinc has a more negative electrode potential in the electrochemical activity series. This property is used for effective protection of steel structures and parts against atmospheric corrosion, in particular by means of hot or cold galvanizing. Zinc is a brittle metal and practically does not deform under normal conditions.
