General Characteristics

Nickel is chemical element number 28, which is designated in D.I. Mendeleev's periodic table by the symbol Ni. It is a shiny white-silver metal with atomic weight 58 and valence I, III. Its melting point is 1453 °C, and its boiling point is 2140 °C. Pure nickel is very hard, but easy to polish and forge. Like iron, nickel is magnetically attracted. The properties of this metal are similar to those of cobalt and iron. Nickel is resistant to atmospheric and soil moisture and some acids - its surface is protected by a persistent oxide film. Nickel is easily soluble in nitric acid. Nickel nitrate Ni (_NO3)2 turns the solution green. Generally, nickel salts have a green coloring. Of greatest practical value is sulfur-nickel vitriol _NiSO4, which forms emerald-green beautiful crystals. When heated to 230 °C, the crystals lose water, taking on a grayish-yellow color.

Of all the nickel compounds, one of the most important practical uses is _{Ni2 O3} oxide, which is used in the production of nickel-cadmium batteries. Nickel is used in nearly every branch of industry and the nation's economy. A beautiful nickel coating, which keeps its shine in the air for a long time because of the absence of oxidation, is used in the manufacture of many products. At the same time, nickel is not recommended to replace silverware, because its salts are poisonous and it oxidizes faster than silver. Nickel powder is an active catalyst that accelerates many chemical processes.
