Advantages of nickel and nickel alloys
General Characteristics
Metals and alloys are the basis of modern technology. Technical progress imposes ever more stringent requirements on them. Heat-resistant, acid-resistant materials with special properties were created from nickel alloys. The great popularity of nickel alloys confirms their number. To date, more than 3,000 grades of nickel alloys have been described. This metal gives the alloy its valuable qualities. In the consumption structure, more than 80% of Ni is consumed in alloys. 20% is used for protective coatings. Tough and ductile nickel in its pure form is also widely used in the form of bars, wires, sheets and tubes. Its high plasticity makes it suitable for manufacturing various parts by hot and cold deformation methods. Industrial chemistry, food, textile and electrotechnical branches are especially needful for nickel.
Chemical resistance
Pure nickel is used for making different apparatuses, tanks, boilers and crucibles that are highly corrosion resistant. Nickel is of particular importance in the production of vessels and for the storage of food and chemicals. Nickel crucibles are widely used in analytical chemistry. Depending on the diameter, nickel tubes are used for the production of condensers, for hydrogen synthesis, for pumping chemicals. Nickel, instruments are indispensable in medicine, in research practice.
Nickel and its alloys play a crucial role in the construction of nuclear boilers. They are used as high-temperature protective cladding for protection of uranium rods from corrosion in nuclear reactors.
Electrical properties
Radar, television and modern energy production cannot do without nickel. Nickel plates replaced cadmium plates in neutron beam breakers to produce high-energy neutron pulses. Nickel plates are used in ultrasonic machines as well as in modern telephones. Alloys with manganese additives (manganese nickel) are used in gas-tron rectifiers for electrode system holders and for incandescent lamps. Alumel and chromel alloys are the most widely used thermocouple material. With their help it is possible to accurately measure the temperature in a large range in oxidizing environments (up to t ° 1200-1300 ° C), i.e. in industrial processes. Nickel and copper alloys (copel, constantan) are used for rheostats. In such alloys 40-50% Ni and electrical resistance does not change with changes in temperature.
High strength
Reactive engineering would not be possible without special heat-resistant alloys. Transportation engineering is based on the use of high-strength iron, titanium, chromium-nickel, and other alloys. Although the reserves of nickel in the Earth's crust among other metals occupy only the thirteenth place, its importance in engineering is not less than iron, aluminum, copper and other important metals.
