Brass Structure

As an alloy of copper and zinc, brass in its structure has a solid solution of copper in zinc, and the limit concentration of the latter may not be higher than 39%. The diagram of state "copper-zinc" is distinguished by the fact that when this indicator is exceeded, the formation of intermetallic compound CuZn begins, which is accompanied by a sharp decline in the plasticity of the alloy. Such brass is called β-phase and has a volume-centered cubic lattice.

Plasticity

With reduction of zinc percentage up to 30%, in the structure of the alloy appears α-hard solution, as a result of which the brass becomes more ductile; simultaneously the hardness of the alloy increases somewhat. The brass grades used in practice can thus be single-phase, containing only an α-hard solution, or two-phase, which has an α+β structure. Supplier Evek GmbH offers to buy brass rolled products of domestic and foreign production at an affordable price in a wide range. We provide delivery of products to any point of the continent. Plastic deformation

Single-phase brass is very plastic, and therefore lends itself well to plastic deformation, even at room temperature. The same structural changes take place during plastic deformation as in the case of steels: the hardness increases, while the grain size decreases with the degree of deformation. If for the operation of the finished products it is undesirable, after pressure treatment a recrystallization annealing is carried out at temperature of 650-700°С, as a result of which the plasticity is restored.

Mechanical treatment

The increase in zinc percentage improves mechanical processing and wear resistance of single-phase brass, but at the same time its electric conductivity and thermal conductivity deteriorate. Two phase brasses are predominantly machined using hot plastoforming techniques, with the addition of lead to improve machinability. Lead also has a positive effect on the ability of alloys to resist frictional wear. Cold plastic deformation requires pre annealing.

Fluidity

Conventional two-phase brasses have good fluidity, but when poured into moulds they give rise to large shrinkage pockets, so they are alloyed with additional iron and aluminium. The addition of silicon and nickel increases the resistance of such alloys in sea water.
