The difference between copper and bronze
Bronze, being an alloy of copper with tin and a number of other metals, differs in the following parameters:
- In color: bronze is darker than copper, and has a characteristic dark red hue, sometimes with the presence of brown colors;
- Bronze is harder than copper;
- If you affect the surface of copper products with a hot solution of electrolyte - for example, NaCl or FeCl3, then the treated area will darken after a while. The bronze part will change its color much less noticeably;
- If you treat a copper part with concentrated nitric acid, the surface will turn an azure color, which is not the case with bronze;
- The thermal conductivity of bronze is lower than that of copper, so if the thickness of the two workpieces is equal, the bronze one heats up faster than the copper one;
- Bronze is considered a less ductile alloy than copper, so it is easier to drill bronze because of the lack of drainage chips;
- Some bronzes, particularly beryllium bronzes, are notably hardened by quenching and subsequent aging; as a result, the strength and hardness can reach the values characteristic of steels.

The difference between copper and brass
Brass, as an alloy of copper with zinc, has a lighter color, with a lemon-yellow hue. This shade is formed over time, with a long stay of the brass part in the air. Therefore, in order to make a better comparison, the product is usually treated with a detergent designed for cleaning non-ferrous metals and alloys. In addition, the following methods are used in production:
- In the reflected light of an LED lamp, or under direct sunlight on a polished brass bar, bands of a darker hue are clearly visible;
- When striking a hollow brass rod, the sound is audible with a finer tone. Copper, as a softer metal, produces a muffled sound;
- Copper bars are either marked with the letter M or are not marked at all. The original rolled brass is always marked L;
- If an electric current of the same strength is passed through a copper wire and a brass wire of the same cross-section, then the brass wire heats up more;
- Copper parts in household plumbing fixtures are much less common than brass because of its high cost.
