General requirements

After carburizing, structural steel should have a suspended surface hardness with a relatively ductile, but sufficiently hard core (otherwise the carburized layer will be pressed through). In addition, good machinability of rolled products, both by cutting and pressure, should be ensured.

Alloying

The composition of the alloying elements is important. Even with a relatively low percentage of carbon (not higher than 0.1-0.2%) such steels acquire sufficient strength and hardness after hardening. Of all the alloying elements, the hardenability of cemented steel products is increased most by chromium and the combination of chromium and nickel. Thus, chromium construction steel is hardened through the billet up to 50 mm in diameter, and chromium-nickel steel up to 150 mm.

Hardness

A feature of carburizing of alloy steels is their ability to acquire increased hardness if the cooling rate is reduced. That is why such steels are cooled in oil rather than water after hardening. This reduces warpage (which is important for products with complex configurations). To increase effectively the hardness and wear resistance of the surface, cementation of constructional steels containing chromium is used: 12Cr13, 12Cr17, etc.

Grades

The most common grades of structural alloy steels that are subjected to carburizing. When alloying steels with molybdenum, titanium, boron and nickel the increase in heating and holding times has almost no effect on grain size. Therefore for carburizing the following grades are used more often: 15Х, 20Х, 18 ХХГТ, 25ХГГТ, 20ХГНР, 20ХН, 20Х2Н4А. Carbide forming elements

It is also important to have in the chemical composition of carbide-forming elements. These are titanium, manganese, tungsten, molybdenum and vanadium, which form a different carbide structure.
