Marking principles of tool carbon steels are regulated by GOST 1435-99. Besides silicon and manganese, such steels may also contain a certain amount of copper and nickel, as shown in the following tables:

The letters and numbers in the steel grade symbolize: U - carbon, followed by a number - the average mass fraction of carbon in tenths of a percent, D - increased mass fraction of manganese.

Notes:
1. The total mass fraction of chromium, nickel and copper in Group 2 metal products must not exceed 0.40%.
2. For Group 1 and 3 steel products made from steel produced by the scrap process, an increased mass fraction of nickel, copper and chromium by 0.05% of each element is allowed (as compared to those specified in the table). For metal intended for the production of cold rolled strip, an increase in the mass fraction of nickel, copper and chromium is not allowed.

Therefore, the presence of carbon is taken as the basis for marking of tool carbon steels of domestic production, which is indicated by the first letter of the marking U, followed by the average carbon content in steel in percent, increased by a factor of 10. Thus, steel, which according to GOST 1435-99 contains 1.15 ... 1.24% C, will have a grade U12. With increased requirements to the accuracy of chemical composition and limitation of nonmetallic impurities - sulfur and phosphorus, the letter A is indicated at the end of the designation.
