Properties affecting weldability
The low percentage of carbon facilitates the weldability of steel alloys. In the first place there are problems of quality joints:
- Equal strength of the weld along the length;
- Compliance of weld mechanical characteristics with similar parameters for the base metal;
- Absence of welding defects;
- Geometric characteristics of the weld;
- Minimization of time spent on welding operations.
Alloying elements
Low-carbon structural steels lend themselves well to all kinds of welding: electric arc gas welding, etc. However, the strength characteristics of low-carbon steel alloys are low, and to ensure the required performance of the welded structure is to increase its metal consumption. Therefore, the composition of these steel alloys must have such alloying elements, which, due to the formation of solid solutions, carbides and nitrides during melting allowed to increase the strength properties. Such elements include manganese, chromium and silicon, and the addition of nickel increases the ductility of steel, and allows it to retain a high level of resistance to creep under prolonged stress. Also in the composition of such steels there is copper in small amounts (up to 0.25 ... 0.3%), which increases the resistance of the welded structure to a variety of corrosive processes. The heat resistance of steels is increased by the addition of molybdenum and tungsten. Domestic standards provide for up to 30 grades of steels for the production of welded structures, almost all of them are interchangeable. Welding modes and consumables
Heat-resistant steels with pearlite grain structure have the highest requirements for observance of welding procedure. The main ones are such grades as 12MH, 12X1MF, 20XMFL that are widely used in production of power units. The presence of molybdenum and tungsten increases the heat resistance of such steels (the values are maintained up to temperatures of 450...500 ° C), but also increases the sensitivity to thermal effects. Steels alloyed with molybdenum and tungsten are more prone to formation of welding cracks at overheating, especially if forced modes characterized by high welding currents are used for welding. Thus, low currents should be used when welding such steels, and other parameters - arc length and arc voltage - should be adjusted within much narrower limits.
Electrodes
Electrodes of E38, E42 and E46 types, which have surface coatings, are used for manual arc welding. The electrodes consist of 08 kp low-carbon steel. For gas welding in shielding gas (carbon dioxide with argon) electrodes of 08G2S construction steel are used.
