From early springs to alloy spring steels
Early mechanisms used elastic parts made from wood and, later, bronze. These materials helped demonstrate stored elastic energy, but they could not provide the strength, consistency and fatigue resistance expected from modern steel springs.
Development of spring steel
Spring steel did not appear in one step. Its development followed improvements in steelmaking, carbon control, forming and heat treatment. During the Industrial Revolution, steel springs became increasingly important in clocks, machinery, rail and road vehicles. Higher-carbon steels offered better hardness and elastic recovery than earlier materials.
Coiling and heat treatment
Mechanized coiling and controlled hardening and tempering made spring geometry and performance more repeatable. Final properties still depend on the grade, section size, forming route and heat-treatment cycle. The material designation alone is not enough to approve a spring for a particular fatigue load or operating environment.
History of leaf springs
Leaf springs developed as elastic supports for wheeled vehicles. Single leaves evolved into multi-leaf assemblies able to carry greater loads and absorb road shock. Alloying with silicon, manganese, chromium and vanadium later improved strength, durability and resistance to repeated loading.
Modern grade selection
Modern spring steels include carbon and alloy grades selected for load, deflection, fatigue life, corrosion environment and manufacturing method. Buyers should specify the governing standard, product form, condition, dimensions and heat treatment rather than rely on the broad term “spring steel.”
