Effect of impurities
Pure molybdenum does not react with cold alkalis or inorganic acid solutions. Impurities of metals, nitrogen, carbon, oxygen, sulfur, phosphorus significantly change its properties. Oxygen is considered to be the most harmful of all impurities. It increases brittleness, making plastic deformation difficult, especially in the simultaneous presence of carbon and nitrogen. Silicon-alloyed molybdenum can be operated up to 2000 °C. Silicon-alkali additives, impart high tensile and bending strength in the annealed state, and increase the recrystallization temperature. The alloying with cobalt increases ductility in the annealed condition.
