Manufacturing
Multilayer sheet is based on inexpensive low-alloy steel. The sheet is then coated with high-alloyed stainless steel or non-ferrous metals or aluminum. Such sheets may be made of carbon steel alternately with layers of varying carbon saturation. The alloying additives are also used in this case in different ways. Two-layer stainless steel sheets are produced by hot-rolling two sheets. The upper layer, as a higher quality layer, performs a protective function, protecting the metal from corrosion. This method saves materials, and production is cheaper. Three-layer sheets are obtained by placing a low-carbon interlayer between two sheets of high-alloyed steel. Such a three-layer billet is then hot-rolled. Three-layer sheets are also made as follows. Two thick stainless steel plates are placed in the ingot. To avoid sintering, they are pretreated with chromium oxide. Carbon steel is inserted between the plates and the edge is welded. Then the ingot is rolled to the desired thickness. Twice the thickness of two-layer stainless steel is obtained by a method in which a four-layer billet is rolled. The sheets are pre-rounded and two sheets of carbon steel are placed between the high-alloy steel, laying them with protective strips. The workpiece is welded and rolled. The sheets are then separated from each other and treated at 1250 °C. In conclusion, polymer-coated steel can also be classified as multilayer. Plastic extends the life of stainless steel, giving additional protection.
