Generalities
Zirconium sheet is produced from billets of high chemical purity with an allowable inclusion of about 2.5 percent niobium. The sheet is produced by cold rolling followed by vacuum annealing. Annealing is required for subsequent surface etching. As a result, zirconium sheet becomes more resistant to corrosion. Zirconium sheet is produced under TU 95.46-83 in thickness of 1.5 and 2.0 mm, in sheet width of 250 and 418 mm. The sheet is produced in 3000 mm length. Upon agreement with the customer, zirconium sheet can be produced in other sizes. Flat products are supplied with cut edges. Tolerance of flatness and sickliness of finished plate must not exceed 5 mm along the whole length of the rolled billet.
Packaging
Due to its susceptibility to open flame, the finished zirconium sheets are carefully and hermetically packed. after straightening and cleaning, the sheets are placed in piles of corrugated cardboard, which are then placed in containers for subsequent transportation. The plate marking is mandatory: the profile designation and grade, batch melting data, dimensions and weight of the plate are indicated on the rolled product. When storing rolled zirconium sheets, contact of blanks with chemically aggressive media must be excluded.
Application
Zirconium sheet parts are used in the manufacture of nuclear reactor vessels (in particular, fuel cassettes). Zirconium sheet also finds application in chemical industry for manufacturing special containers (cassettes, vessels, etc.).
