Processing technology

The ductility of tantalum ingots during pressure processing is affected by the content of introductions (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon). Tantalum ingots, with the exception of ingots with extremely low content of interstitial impurities, are brittle at low temperatures. Therefore, tantalum ingot production technology includes destruction of the cast structure by forging or pressing. After breaking the cast structure, the hot-deformed material is deburred to remove oxygen-enriched surface layers, annealed under vacuum to obtainrecrystallized structure, and then processed in the cold state to the required size by any deformation method (if necessary, with the introduction of intermediate annealing). The content of oxygen in the finished product is within 0,01...0,08%, nitrogen - 0,01...0,04%, carbon - 0,01...0,05%.

Difficulties

It is possible to process ingots with somewhat high content of introduction admixtures; however, difficulties arise due to material cracking during hot deformation and subsequent cold deformation; besides, frequent intermediate annealing is required for cold deformation. Tantalum ingots with very low content of intermediate elements can be successfully coldworked directly in the cast state (i.e. without cracking).

Heating

The ingots can be heated up to the forging temperature in air before hot work, but only with fast heating, because the continuous heating to the hot deformation temperature (about 1200°C) results in oxygen diffusion and increases the brittleness of the metal. Heating of tantalum ingots in an argon atmosphere has been successfully used for forging under hammer and press and crimping in the temperature range of 650 to 1200 °C. It is also possible to heat tantalum ingots in a reducing atmosphere, but with caution since tantalum in a hydrogen atmosphere turns into a hydride during slow cooling from 1100 °C. In this case, tantalum can be heated in a hydrogen atmosphere above the temperature range of hydride formation, then machined in air.

Deburring

One way to reduce forging cracking is to grind the head and the bottom of the ingot before forging so that their surfaces become parallel. Another method is to use a bottom striker with a V-shaped notch, on which the ingot is placed to ensure that a triaxial stress state is created during forging.
