Rolling mills for stainless steel
History
Rolling mills appeared in the middle of the 18th century, when steam engines were used to roll metal ingots on rolls. In America at the end of the 19th century the first blooming and slabbing mills, analogues of modern rolling mills, were designed.
Modern production
Stainless steel bars today are produced on rolling mills equipped with new technologies, but still by mechanical action on the ingot, which can weigh from 1 to 18 tons. Rolled billets can be cold-rolled and hot-rolled. Cold or hot steel billets are placed on a rolling mill with rolls, where the actual process of crimping, rolling, calibration and cutting of stainless steel billets takes place. As a result, the following types of rolled products are produced:
- Stainless steel sheet metal products - the most popular material, always in demand for construction and the widest range of industries;
- calibrated rolled products - rebar, bars, plates of different cross-section;
- seamless stainless steel tubing;
- special purpose rolled products - bent round section blanks.
In modern rolling mills the throughput on lines of last generation reaches 50 m/s, exactly at such a speed the billets move through the mill. Fully automated systems control the quality of the material at every stage of the transformation process and check that the product conforms to the planned dimensions. Computer control has increased the accuracy of the stainless steel product range by an order of magnitude.
Prospects
Modern rolling mill technologies offer solutions which allow us to achieve brilliant results. New super high-strength alloyed stainless steel alloys are already on the consumer market and the fast development of innovative nanotechnologies promises that in the foreseeable future a whole range of materials with unique properties will appear.
Types of rolled steel
Steel billets in the rolling mill can be arranged in three ways during processing: longitudinally, transversely, and helically. Depending on the chosen method, rolled steel is divided into the following types:
- Rolled longitudinally, when the billet is crimped, reducing the longitudinal section and increasing the length and width. Such a method is used to produce bar, section and sheet rolling;
- The transverse method is characterized by the fact that the steel ingot is processed in the transverse direction in the process of rotation. This method makes a variety of rounded billets;
- helical rolling combines the mechanical processes of the two above-mentioned technologies and is intended for the production of seamless pipes.
Changes in the mechanical parameters of the crimping and rolling mill billet motion, you can get the desired product shape, which will later be made of various parts and components of structures.
