Cross rolling
General Characteristics
The conical or cylindrical mandrel is used for rolling thin-walled stainless steel pipe of large diameter. The rolls are placed along the perimeter of the tube at an equal distance from each other. Each cycle reduces the wall thickness of the workpiece. The metal that is displaced goes to increase the diameter and length of the pipe. Depending on the nature of the deformation, this process is referred to as roll expansion of the pipe, or rolling with drawing.
Rolling process
The basic principle of this rolling method is rotary extrusion under the influence of an axial force that is applied to the pipe. In addition to axial movement, the rolls of the mill also rotate the billet. Rotation can also be imparted to the billet by the mandrel. In cold cross rolling, the axes of the rolls and the tube are in the same plane. The rolls can be minimally displaced by changing the feed angle of the billet. Another factor that affects roll misalignment is the axial pulling force generated by drive rolls. The pulling force makes the rolling process continuous. In cross rolling, rolled, forged, welded, or stamped sheet stock comes into the mill as blanks.
