Requirements for ball bearing steels

The high sliding speeds that are achieved in modern ball and roller bearing assemblies have led metal scientists and metallurgists to conduct research on the proper durability of these assemblies. Works on creation of special steel were carried out at the turn of XIX-XX centuries and finished with creation in 1901 of ShKh 15 steel grade that is still in use today. Later some more grades of special ball bearing steels were developed that were distinguished by increased carbon content up to 1% and by presence in their chemical composition of considerable quantity of elements which form the martensite structure together with carbides after hardening. This structure gives the ball bearing steels high hardness, increased resistance to all types of wear, as well as notable hardenability. To increase hardenability, the manganese and silicon percentages are also added to the steel.

Microstructure peculiarities

During further processing of these steels, the requirements for cleanliness and uniformity of carbide distribution in the microstructure increase, since if the carbide heterogeneity grade is exceeded, the surface layers of the parts made of these steels are pitted. All bearing steels are subject to strict control in terms of porosity, amount of non-metallic impurities, carbide grain size as well as the presence of carbide liquation. Evek GmbH offers to buy bearing steel at an affordable price in a wide range. We provide delivery of products to any point on the continent. The price is optimal.

Application

Bearing steels are used to produce balls, rollers and bearing rings, although they are also widely used in the tool industry to manufacture working parts for die tools

Operation features

It has been established in research that bearing elements are subjected to substantial loads of variable sign. In the course of each technological cycle, the load is distributed over a small bearing surface. As a consequence, contact tensile-compressive loads reach 30...50 MPa. Elastic and even plastic deformations occur, resulting in a slight distortion of the contour of the bearing parts. Bearing steel can be destroyed not only by fatigue stresses, but also by frictional abrasion of bearing elements in contact with each other. The extent of such abrasion is determined by the precision of bearing manufacture and installation, the quality of the lubricant, and the environment in which the bearing operates.
