Titanium Density and Specific Heat by Grade

Typical density of common titanium grades

Titanium grades do not all have exactly the same density. Commercially pure titanium, including Grade 2 / UNS R50400, is commonly represented by a nominal density around 4.51 g/cm³. Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 / UNS R56400 is commonly represented near 4.43 g/cm³. These values are appropriate for preliminary weight calculations, while the applicable product specification and certified dimensions govern an actual order.

The difference matters when estimating plate, bar, tube or finished-component mass. For accurate purchasing calculations, use the nominal density for the specified grade together with the actual dimensional tolerances. A generic “titanium” value can introduce error when a large quantity or tight weight limit is involved.

Specific heat changes with temperature

Specific heat is the energy required to raise the temperature of a unit mass of material. For titanium and its alloys it changes with temperature and can also vary with chemistry and condition. Room-temperature handbook data is useful for preliminary heat-balance calculations but should not be extended across a wide temperature range without grade-specific engineering data.

Thermal conductivity, expansion, emissivity, airflow, contact resistance and geometry also influence heating and cooling behavior. A density or specific-heat table alone cannot determine component temperature, cycle time or service life.

Grade 2 versus Grade 5

Grade 2 is commercially pure titanium valued for corrosion resistance, formability and a useful strength-to-weight balance. Grade 5 is an alpha-beta titanium alloy containing aluminum and vanadium and is selected where higher strength is required. They are not interchangeable: fabrication route, weldability, mechanical properties, service environment and controlling standards must all be reviewed.
