Soldering and welding of thermocouple wire
Relevance
The advantage of welding is that when used in high temperature conditions the welded contact is not broken. If the Ø of the wire to be welded does not exceed 0.15-0.2 mm, its ends are overlapped (distance 15-20 mm) and a thin copper thread of Ø 0.1-0.15 mm is wound around them. Then the ends connected in this way are heated with a gas burner. The copper begins to melt and firmly connects the ends of the thermocouple wire.
Difficulties in welding
Welding thermocouple wire entails difficulties due to the propensity to form pores at a sharp change in the solubility of nitrogen, hydrogen and oxygen after the transition of metal from solid to liquid. To obtain pore-free welds, an important condition is the cleanliness of the material surface, as well as the use of coatings or fluxes that can bind nickel oxides. For this reason, the welding technology can provide reliable protection of the welded area from atmospheric air, degassing of the weld pool and good deoxidation. An effective measure to prevent porosity is short arc welding (up to 1.5 mm), which significantly reduces the flow of gases
