Heat treatment of single-phase (plain) brass

For these varieties, recrystallization or conventional annealing is used. The purpose is to remove internal stresses that may appear in the process of plastic deformation of the material. The mode of annealing depends on the zinc concentration in the alloy: with the increase of this parameter the required temperature of heat treatment decreases, but not more than to 300 °C. The efficiency of annealing depends on the final grain size in the microstructure. They are determined by readings of a metal-instrumental microscope, or by reference structures, which are given in GOST 5362.

Atmosphere for annealing

It is not recommended to perform heat treatment in an ordinary atmosphere containing a significant amount of oxygen. This leads to an uneven reduction of the grain size and the surface of the alloy is clearly marked by oxide spots, which have to be removed by etching the alloy in a solution of phosphoric acid or potassium dichromic acid. A more effective method of heat treatment is vacuum annealing or the use of a protective atmosphere of inert gases. At the same time, zinc burnout is reduced.

Heat treatment of two phase brasses

Multiphase brasses are produced by adding alloying elements other than zinc - iron, aluminium, lead, etc . Each brass grade has its own recrystallization annealing temperature. The following regimes are most commonly used:
