Composition and properties
Steel AISI 441 (1.4509) is a heat-resistant steel with high corrosion resistance, including high-temperature corrosion. This is due to the presence of chemical elements that double stabilize the structure of the material. Manufactured to the North American ASTM standard, AISI 441 (1.4509) steel includes the following alloying elements:
Component | C | Si | Mn | Ti | Nb | Cr |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Percentage composition | Not more than 0.03 | Not more than 1.0 | Not more than 1.0 | 0,1...0,6 | 0,3...1,0 | 17,5...18,5 |
As unavoidable metallurgical impurities, the composition of this steel grade also includes sulphur (its quantity does not exceed 0.015%), and phosphorus (in an amount up to 0.04%).
The European analogue of this steel is X2CrTiNb18, which is produced in accordance with UNS 43940 standards. The composition of the steel is practically identical to the steel in question. There is no analogue of AISI 441 (1.4509) steel in the CIS countries.
A characteristic feature of this material is very high corrosion resistance against high temperature chemically aggressive substances - gaseous or liquid. This characteristic is maintained in full measure at elevated temperatures up to 9000 C and surface pressures on parts made of this steel. The high surface hardness of steel is due to the large amount of nitrides, which are formed during the melting process, then effectively binds the chrome. The steel is also noted for its great weldability, which makes it easy to fabricate composite structures from it.
This steel is very easy to wire and cut. Stamping is possible in a cold state, but if the steel has a considerable degree of deformation it will be necessary to pass a preliminary annealing (holding temperature in a thermal furnace - 700 ... 7500 C, followed by cooling in still air). Mechanical processing of the material is better performed with a tool made of high-speed steel.
Wire of AISI 441 (1.4509) steel is well subjected to drawing in carbide drawings, after which automatic upsetting on multi-position automatic machines is possible. The strain-hardening intensity is low and corresponds to the normal mild steels.
Applications
Wire and rod of AISI 441 (1.4509) is used in the manufacture of critical volume parts of machines operating in conditions of pitting-corrosion: pistons and pumps of compressor units, units for pumping chemically aggressive media and other components that operate at high pressures and temperatures. Durability of parts is not affected by the pH value of the external working environment, the surface heating temperature (within the above values), as well as the friction conditions. This is due to the high stability of chromium carbides and nitrides present in the near-surface layers, stabilized by niobium and titanium.
Evek GmbH offers AISI 441 (1.4509) ferritic stainless steel wire and tubes at a supplier's price. In this case, the desired range of diameters, the type of ordered assortment is fully provided. Each batch is accompanied by a quality certificate of the manufacturer of this steel.
