Composition and properties
AISI 441 (1.4509) steel is a high-temperature corrosion-resistant steel due to its physical and mechanical properties. To this end, it contains titanium and niobium, two chemical elements that provide a double stabilization of the steel microstructure. According to ASTM (USA) standard, AISI 441 steel (1.4509) includes:
Component | C | Si | Mn | Ti | Nb | Cr | Fe |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Percentages | Not more than 0.03 | Not more than 1.0 | Not more than 1.0 | 0,1...0,6 | 0,3...1,0 | 17,5...18,5 | the rest |
This steel contains metallurgical impurities such as sulfur (at a maximum percentage of 0.015%) and phosphorus (up to 0.04%). The European UNS 43940 regulations additionally allow for a small amount of nitrogen, which is determined by the melting conditions (conventional, or in a vacuum arc furnace). Steel X2CrTiNb18, melted by European manufacturers, has a similar chemical composition. The effectiveness of AISI 441 (1.4509) steel is determined by its very high corrosion resistance, which applies to all high-temperature chemically aggressive substances, regardless of the aggregate state in which they exist. The steel retains its resistance and strength up to the operating temperatures of 850...9500 C. At the same time, the strength and hardness values are fully retained due to the presence of chromium carbides and nitrides in the surface layers. Due to the high weldability of AISI 441 (1.4509) steel it is possible to manufacture complex spatial structures from sheet and strip without loss of bending and tensile strength.
Sheets and strips of the steel in question are easy to work by cutting and forming, since the distortion hardening of the material is negligible. Strip stampings can be drawn and bent, and the presence of sulphur increases the stability of the forming's parting transitions, including high-speed operations. The steel can be annealed and annealed between operations, after which its machinability on machine tools increases. For high quality annealing the holding temperature of the metal in the furnace is set not higher than 700...7500 C, and the subsequent cooling of rolled sheets is done in the air. For the processing of material on metal-cutting machines, it is advisable to use tools made of high-speed steel.
Application of
Sheet and strip stainless steel AISI 441 (1.4509) is used for the production of housing parts of installations that are subjected to active pitting corrosion, with damage to the surface of the metal. These are shells of elevators, conveyor frames, chemical units and other products, which are exposed to significant differences in mechanical stress, loads from friction forces and elevated temperatures during operation.
