General Characteristics

A hundred years ago, nickel, along with gold and silver, was considered a precious metal, and only the very wealthy could afford dishes made of it. For a time, however, the metal was banned from use because of an unknown illness of the emperor of Austria, who used utensils made of the metal. Nowadays, nickel tableware successfully replaces silverware, although some people may be highly allergic to it. Nickel products today are so common that almost no industry can do without them. There are several grades of nickel: N (pure nickel) and NP (semi-finished nickel). The latter is marked with different grades depending on the amount of impurities it contains.

Alloy NP-2 with increased strength and wear resistance is one of the most common semi-finished nickel alloys. Its composition includes such impurities as silicon, sulfur, manganese, tin, iron.

Production

The production of nickel products is a highly sophisticated process. In the manufacture of ribbon or wire, whose thickness is measured in micrometers, the manufacturer guarantees compliance with customer requirements and minimum deviation from established standards. NP-2 strip is produced according to GOST 15 515-70 with thickness 0,05-2 mm with a tolerance of 0,01-0,1 mm towards reduction of thickness; with the width of 10-300 mm with allowable tolerance of 0,2-1 mm towards increase of width; with the length of 2,5 m. The surface must be smooth and clean. The tape length can be longer, but tapes of smaller lengths are not produced. Tape with thickness from 0.1 to 0.5 mm can be produced up to 100m length by agreement with the manufacturer, but in this case welding joints will be visible. Depending on the thickness, the weight of the strip may vary from 0.5 kg to almost 18 kg per square meter of the product. On the surface, minor dents from transportation, risks, color variations are allowed. Changes in color are also prescribed in the standard, they directly depend on the terms and conditions of storage of the product. Tape may be called a nickel strip if a section is meant.

Applications

In the engineering industry, electrical engineering - for the manufacture of various electric heaters and elements with high resistance, with stable parameters. As a rule, such elements are made of NP-2 tape or wire, which thickness is from 5 to 20 micrometers. Tape thicker are used in medicine, the manufacture of musical instruments, the manufacture of motor parts for cars, tractors, aircraft, in research laboratories of physics and chemistry.
