Hafnium oxide (HfO₂), also known as hafnium(IV) oxide or HF oxide, is a high-temperature-resistant ceramic compound of the element hafnium. The material is characterized by a very high melting point, high density and excellent chemical and thermal stability.
Hafnium oxide occurs in several temperature-dependent crystal structures. These special structural properties make HfO₂ an important material for modern technical ceramics and electronic applications. Due to its high dielectric constant, hafnium oxide is particularly important in the semiconductor and microelectronics industries, where it is used as a high-k dielectric.
In addition, hafnium oxide offers high temperature and wear resistance. It is therefore suitable for high-temperature applications, ceramic components, protective coatings and specialty technical materials. High-purity HfO₂ can also be used as a raw material for the production of other hafnium compounds and for demanding research applications.
