Circle, bar hafnium Gfi-1
Hafnium is a silvery metal that is extremely heat-resistant and strong. In its pure form, it is highly ductile and can be rolled into the thinnest wire up to a few microns thick.
Production
The metal hafnium is extracted from zirconium ores after several processing steps. Hafnium circle is produced from reduced hafnium metal by powder metallurgy using a special electron beam or vacuum arc or plasma melting process. Such a circle - a semi-finished cylindrical shape - is further rolled to the finest wire. The finished circle must be clean and smooth with no cracks or contamination. Shrinkage shells and irregularities are allowed, not going beyond the size of the tolerances stipulated by GOST. On the fracture of the circle should remain intact and contain no foreign inclusions and voids. To obtain the necessary properties Hf is alloyed with special additives (boron, silicon) or additives of tantalum, tungsten and cobalt.

Application
In radio and television engineering hafnium wire is used for production of cathodes, meshes of vacuum devices and microwave generators. It is often used as a high resistance wire for thermal compensation in the manufacture of thermocouples. Heat resistance and low electron yield work (3.53 eV - less than molybdenum, niobium, tungsten) allow to use Hf not only in X-ray technique but also for cathodes of electron guns. It is used to produce electrodes for welding metals in argon and cathodes for welding low-carbon steel in CO2 atmosphere, where the resistance of hafnium electrodes is almost 4 times higher than that of tungsten electrodes. Hafnium doped with 25% tantalum is used to produce oxygen-flame or air-plasma metal cutting electrodes. Such electrodes are much more durable than pure hafnium electrodes. In electroplating, hafnium wire is used to make the electrodes of electroerosion machines which carry out controlled decomposition of compounds by galvanic current. Such wire and mesh is an important part of vacuum devices. Anticorrosive hafnium plating is also applied by means of vacuum wire.
