Basic qualities
Titanium flat-rolled products of high quality titanium alloys BT6 and VTCH are characterized by heat resistance, non-magnetic, high specific strength and corrosion resistance. These alloys are as strong as steel, but almost twice as light. They have a melting point of 1668 °C, poor thermal conductivity, and are easily forged and stamped. Titanium is superior to most metals, primarily in its resistance to corrosion. It is often referred to as a perpetual metal.

Long-term strength of BT6 sheet
Semifinished product | Heat treatment | t°C | Long-term strength (MPa) 100 hours |
---|---|---|---|
Sheets 2-3 mm | Annealing | 350° | 630 |
Sheets 2-3 mm | Annealing | 450° | 520 |
Long-term strength is the maximum stress that breaks the material at a given temperature, after a certain time.
Heat resistance of VT6c sheet
Semifinished product | Heat treatment | t°C | Creep strength (MPa) 0.2/100 |
---|---|---|---|
3 mm sheet | --- | 350 | Over 320 |
Heat resistance is defined by the creep limit - the amount of stress that deforms the material by a given amount at a given temperature. The index through a fraction is the deformation and the time (in hours) in which that deformation occurs.
Fatigue resistance of VT6, VT6c sheet
Sheet | Thickness (mm) | Heat treatment | R | Loading scheme | Endurance limit (MPa) 10.000.000 |

Disadvantages
The cost of titanium alloys is quite high and is connected with the difficulty of extraction from ore. Their production is energy- and labor-intensive, but due to the advantageous combination of useful properties, titanium has no analogues. Despite the high cost, its alloys are in high demand as they are exceptionally durable.
The use of
High specific strength and corrosion resistance of VT6 give an advantage in aircrafts for manufacturing airframe, skin, landing gear, power set, attachment details, wing mechanisms, pylons, hydraulic cylinders, in turbofan engines, in rocket production (skin, attachment details). In shipbuilding, thanks to its resistance to sea water, it is used for propellers, heat exchangers and other equipment. It is also used in modern chemistry and transport machine building. Thanks to biological inertness the alloy is in demand in food industry and in medicine, prostheses and implants made of it are not rejected by tissues. Punch-welded parts are made of HTS titanium alloy, which continuously operate at up to +450°C; they are used in the construction of supersonic aircraft for manufacturing beams, brackets and similar power components
