Advantages

Melting, refining, distillation, reduction in an inert atmosphere or vacuum of yttrium, dysprosium, lutetium, scandium and other rare-earth elements at a melting point above 3000 °C. Smelting of quartz in glass furnaces, growing of crystals of silicon, sapphires, leucosapphires, rubies. For the production of high quality rubies and sapphires, the considerable specific gravity of the tungsten crucible, the purity of the material, and the precision of manufacturing are important.
