Weapons. Tungsten applications
Artillery in the 1950s
In the late 1950s, tungsten carbide was the primary material used to create the kinetic energy, sub-caliber projectile. Although its enormous hardness (Rc 55+) presented difficulties for processing, its high density (about 13 g/cm3) allowed it to be packed into a small volume and, compared to its nearest competitor, the high-carbon article, which provides a quantum leap in penetration capability against a single layer of armor. The first specimen was the M392 projectile developed in Great Britain.
1965-1972.
In the United States, work was done on a program to develop the XM578 152 mm projectile to support the MBT-70 tank. The program used 97.5% tungsten, density 18.5 g/cm3). The core was enclosed in a wedge-shaped casing of maraging steel.
Armor protection
Tungsten alloys were incorporated into the armor steel, allowing the strength of the armor coating to be increased several times.
Rocket Engineering
Parts of rocket engines (nozzles, thrusters). Rocket gyroscopes with special counterweights made of tungsten with high inertia are used to give stability to the rocket flight, which can withstand a rotation speed of 1500-1800 revolutions per minute.
