Tungsten reference
General characteristic
Tungsten is an element of group VI of the periodic table
The use of
Tungsten can be processed (rolling, forging, drawing) only by heating. It imparts hardness and heat resistance to wear-resistant steels, is indispensable in filaments, parts of electro-vacuum devices, parts of aircraft engines. Its high density is beneficial in counterweights of artillery shells, bullets and high-speed (up to 180 thousand rpm) gyroscope rotors that stabilize the flight of ballistic missiles. Tungsten carbide hard alloys are indispensable for machining metal and structural nonmetallic materials in mechanical engineering (milling, turning, chiselling, planing) as well as for drilling. Sulphide WS2 - high quality heat-resistant grease (can be used at t° up to 500°C). WO3 trioxide is used in the manufacture of a solid electrolyte for heat-resistant fuel cells. Tungsten salts are also in demand in the textile and paint industries as a pigment and as a catalyst in organic synthesis. Tungsten monocrystals are used as scintillation detectors of X-rays and other ionizing radiation in medical radiology and nuclear physics. WTe2 ditelluride converts thermal energy to electrical energy (thermal EMF about 57 μV/K). Tungsten is used to produce non-consumable electrodes for argon arc welding.
