Stainless steel pipes
The main types of stainless steel pipe welding:
- TIG (tungsten electrode welding in inert gas, without filler metal);
- Plasma welding (in combination with TIG);
- HF (high-frequency current welding);
- Laser (laser welding);
- Electron beam (electron-beam welding).
In practice, the first three methods are mostly used, while the rest are rarely used because of the high cost and complexity of the technology. But on the other hand laser welding is becoming more popular, and is beginning to gain a firmer foothold among the traditional methods. The choice of one or another method of welding depends mainly on where and in what area the stainless steel tube will be used.
TIG-welding with tungsten electrode
Conducted in an atmosphere of protective inert gases. This is a type of arc welding where the arc itself serves as a heat source. Seam, you get high reliability, by heating the nearby layers to the welding point, though quite wide and rough. Welding in this case is automatic. Shielding gas is fed directly to the welding area from both sides, both outside and inside the pipe. Unfortunately, the appearance of the product will not be so beautiful, because during welding thermal changes in the adjacent layers of the material are inevitable - the so-called white lines are formed. They do not affect the strength of construction, and if aesthetically is not so important, then you can use this method to obtain the permanent connection.
HF-welding with high frequency currents
This method does not use an electrode - metal surfaces are heated by alternating currents at high frequency. The weld, in this case, is perfectly straight and aesthetically more attractive, and the speed of the weld itself is much higher. Hence, the lower cost compared to electric arc welding. But, such a tube is applicable only in constructions working at torsion or high pressure, as weld may have voids and therefore not as strong. As for the aesthetic side of the issue, HF-welding is more attractive for interior decoration, when strength is not so important.
Choice of pipe
Depends on the intended area of its use. The main issue in this case becomes either reliability or appearance, and if the first applies mainly to industry, the second - to interior solutions. As for the finish, a lot also depends on the application, which is determined by the quality of the surface. For example pipes can be hot- or cold-rolled, welded, heat-treated, ground, polished and electropolished. Polishing parts of stainless steel is mainly used in the food industry, in places of contact with loose and sticky products such as flour and dough.
