Technical characteristics
For the successful welding of thin sheets, some metal should be melted and then slightly cooled before the next batch is melted. This avoids the inevitable purging of the weld formation zone, during which the steel may burn through. In order to prevent this, the welder's amplifier setting and wire feed speed should be reduced. Using a thinner wire (0.6 mm instead of 0.8 mm) will also help reduce the operating current of the process.
How to weld thin metal
When using the MIG process, weld in short pulses, in between which the melt will cool down. The minimum pause between pulses should be no more than 0.5 s, and with increasing pause the chance of getting cooled metal overlaps (which are formed between the welds) increases. The risks of using this technique are that the individual beads of the weld cannot melt with each other, which practically guarantees a reduced joint strength. Therefore, this technique is appropriate when welding steel sheets of at least 0.8 mm. For thinner sheets the TIG welding technique is used - welding with a tungsten non-consumable electrode.
Main features of welding
When welding large thin-sheet panels (e.g. a car), then the thermal expansion of the metal during welding can distort the dimensions of the items being joined. The problem is that the dimensions of such parts change with temperature (heating and cooling).
Distortions
Distortion can be minimized by welding the metal at intervals of, for example, 20 mm, and only welding very short sections (less than 20 mm long) at a time, allowing the metal to cool down between each section of the weld. If the weld is long, the first section can be at one end of the sheet and the second at the other.
Optimizing the work cycle
Since the duty cycle will be much shorter than a typical continuous weld in the same welder setup, the welder will need longer weld breaks to allow the weld metal to cool. Cooling
A good effect gives the cooling of workpieces prepared for welding with a damp cloth between sections, or the use of pads of a material with a lower thermal conductivity (in particular, brass), which have under the place of welding seam.
