Stainless steel turning
Relevance
When manufacturing stainless steel products, sometimes it is necessary to process the surface in several stages, using various technological methods. This makes it possible to give the necessary shape and dimensions to the stainless steel product with a high degree of accuracy. Machining on a lathe makes it possible to cut steel blanks in compliance with all technological norms and standards requirements.
Technology
Turning consists in the penetration of tool knives with their cutting edge deep into the steel workpieces, which makes it possible to separate the necessary layers of stainless steel in the form of chips. There are many tools on the lathe: dies, countersinks, shaped tools, cutters, reamers and drills. The turner is the most common tool for working on stainless steel. It is used not only for semi-finishing and roughing, but also for finishing and fine finishing of stainless steel workpieces. It is suitable for threading inside the square of stainless steel or other steel products, as well as for working with decorative metal products.
Types of turning tools for stainless steel work
- Straight or beveled feedthrough cutters are used for machining cylindrical surfaces, e.g. for turning stepped rolls.
- Surfaces on the ends of stainless steel workpieces are machined using undercutting picks which are perpendicular to the plane to be turned.
- With the help of boring turning cutters it is possible to make holes on stainless steel products.
- Cutting of bars, pipes and other stainless steel workpieces is done with cut-off picks.
- Both external and internal threads are cut with special cutters which are called threading cutters.
- Tapered cutters are designed for workpieces with a complex cross-section profile. They are used not only on lathes, but also on turret lathes and lathes with automatic control.
- Contour turning cutters can be used on shaped formations of various machines.
Stainless steel turning cutters can be roughing, finishing and fine turning. They can be tangentially or radially positioned in relation to the workpiece to be turned, and they can be feed to the left or to the right. Cutter heads can be straight, curved, bent or deflected. Cutters are categorized as circular, square and rectangular. There are composite, disassembled and solid cutters made of special tool steels, hard alloys, ceramics and solid steel (e.g. diamond, elbor).
