Hand welding of brass and steel products

Mechanized electric welding of steel and brass

When using semiautomatic welding machines, two technologies are used:

• Welding with copper electrodes containing silicon-manganese bronze surface coatings;
• Welding with non-consumable tungsten electrodes.

The first method is effective for brass, which contains 85% or more copper. The mechanical strength values of the joints are 280-320 MPa, with the bend angle without cracking being at least 170°. Submerged-arc welding with tungsten electrodes is more effective as it has no limitations for brass grades and the ultimate strength of the welded joint is 340...360 MPa with an allowable bending angle of 160...170°. The arc is directed mainly to the brass edges, and to improve the quality and accuracy of the weld use a welded arc length not more than 15 ... 18 mm.
