Analysis of welded joints

Chemical, mechanical, non-destructive and corrosion properties of welded joints with 1 mm thick niobium sheets that were either electron-beam welded in high vacuum or TIG welded in a controlled welding chamber filled with argon gas at 1 atm pressure were investigated. The atmosphere contained a mixture of air, nitrogen, oxygen or hydrogen. The carbon and oxygen content in the weld did not change after TIG welding, but decreased significantly after electron-beam welding. However, the nitrogen content in the weld compared to the TIG method was increased.

Coarse grain size

The heat-affected zone and the weld contain very coarse grains in the microstructure. The hardness of welds in electron beam welding of niobium, was greater when welded with a tungsten electrode in an atmosphere of 99.99% argon than in electron beam welding. If air enters the protective argon atmosphere, the weld is brittle. Hardening of welded niobium products is not possible.

Strength

When testing the strength of the weld obtained by electron-beam welding, the break occurs only in the weld zone, while the break in sintered niobium welded joints obtained by TIG, occurs in the region of the heat-affected zone, or even on the base metal. There is no porosity in the weld area.
