Samarium applications, physical and mechanical properties
Technical Characteristics
Samarium is a light gray metal of the group of heavy lanthanides. Its appearance is similar to that of lead. The chemical symbol is Sm. It is obtained from the mineral samarskite, monazite sand. by metallothermic or electrolytic methods,. It's a fairly active metal. Dissolves in acids, burns in air. Forms nitride with nitrogen. With hydrogen it forms hydrides, with carbon it forms carbide, with silicon it forms silicides and with boron it forms borides.

Usage
Tensosensitive and thermoelectric materials. In alloy with cobalt forms powerful permanent magnets. In alloy with Co, Zr, Hf, Fe, Cu it achieves very high level of coercive force and residual induction. Has a wide neutron capture cross-section. Optimizes atomic decay management. Compared to other elements (cadmium, boron), it "does not burn out" in the reactor, but forms isotopes with a high neutron capture rate. Used as activator of phosphors in color displays.
